Sicily's standout wine shows island's potential____LEI CHEN

LINK

Summary

In the article, “Sicily’s standout wine shows island's potential", Bob Ecker writes about Sicily's wine how to attain spectacular potential. Bob shared his travel experiences to introduce Sicily’s wine from unique location, suitable climate and advanced technology.

In first paragraph, Bob introduced Sicily’s change from ancient times to the present. Nowadays, Sicily not only has a long and exquisite history, but also produced excellent wine. It is because that Sicily has a particular terroir, growing and brewing condition such as superior soil, opulent sunshine and so on.

From paragraph two, I learned that Dalila, a kind of white wine, blend 80% Grillo, an Italy local variety, and 20% Viognier and has excellent taste. Most importantly, it is affordable only $13.9.

Third paragraph, Bob shared his trip of Sicily, talked with winemaker, Lucio Matricardi , who introduced producer conditions. Lucio’s company has modern facilities and 450 planted acres of grapes which planted some unique local Italy varieties and popular international varieties.

In paragraph four, Lucio describe Dalila’s special process which used two different fermentation vessels, stainless steel tanks and new French oak barrels, in order to attain great taste.

Comment

Sicily, a largest island of Mediterranean, has great grape growing condition. Opulent sunshine helps grape to mature. Mediterranean climate bring extremely different temperature, in this way, grape is able to accumulate carbohydrate better.  Volcanically laced soils are rich in all kinds of mineral substance. Climate, soil, sunshine play a vital role in great wine, so Sicily has good potential to make excellent wine.

Viognier, a famous French variety, possesses outstanding aroma such as juicy peach and pineapple and high sugar. However, Grillo’s aroma is not rich and has high acid. Blending Viognier and Grillo is able to neutralize them disadvantaged to attain balance of sugar, acid and fragrances, which is the expression of a perfect wine.

I tasted many Sicily’s white wine. I still do not forget the feeling of Grillo’s juicy peach. Sicily used to produce some table wine, a very cheaper wine, but nowadays technology brings a revolution.

Technology in Transportation System - Pedro Guizardi

On the article “The Future of Urban Transit?” written by Brandon Griggs is presented a new generation for the common cabs. The pods, which are a new metropolitan transport systems run on electrical energy, will be in a not too distant future driven by themselves. Some people who defend the new transportation system say that it will help to minimize the environmental impacts and make the trips more convenient. This technology has been tested since 2011, at London's Healthrow Airport, reducing an overage of 50,000 bus trips a year. Milton Keynes, London, is aiming to apply the pods on its streets. The pods, which would move on the pedestrian walkways, will connect two bustling areas. According to Geoff Snelson the pods may be requested by smartphones or find in a pods’ station outside. The pods will have a sort of futuristic designer. They will have two seats, and a big windshield. Snelson quoted “We want people to be curious about using them”. The first prototypes have been developed by the British group RDM from Oxford University’s Mobile Robotics Group. In the beginning they will be driven by humans and work almost as common cars. The plans for the future are to make the pods independents of human driver. Built with cameras and sensors the pods will be able to guide itself throughout the way without collisions. The advocacy group Transport Systems Catapult with Neil Fulton said that the security has received a great attention. The first two-seater pods will be tested in the spring, and with the idea of have more pods operating until the end of 2015.
Technology has been providing this kind of comfortable to us. Since the first computers were created, computed systems have invaded everything. Probably everyone has already had some problem when waiting for a cap or a bus, which sometimes takes hours to pass. This innovation in the transportation system is fundamental nowadays. It can make the life much more convenient because of the many benefits that it bring to us.

Potato power: the spuds that could light the world_ Natalia Carolina C Ferreira

Summary
The article Potato power: the spuds that could light the world, written by Jonathan Kalan, tells about an interesting source of energy: Potatoes. According to some studies, one potato can provide enough power for LED lamps during 40 days. Basically the principle of the production of energy from potatoes is that the acid inside of the potato causes a reaction with a negative electrode (anode), such as zinc, and a positive electrode (cathode), such as a copper. During this reaction, electrons flow from the anode to the cathode and the energy is released. The author mentions an interesting studied of PhD students, Alex Goldberg and Boris Rubinsky of the University of California, Berkeley. They discovered that a boiled potato produces more energy due to the fact that after be boiled, organic tissues of the potato are broken down and this cause a resistance reduction. Their study also released that cutting the potato could also increase the power making a series with sandwiched by a cooper and zinc plate. Using these techniques they could improve the power in 10 times, what it is interesting economically. Kalan also mentions that the world produces a large quantity of potatoes, in 2010 it did about 330 billions of tones. Potatoes are a good alternative because are cheap, easy for store and last so much time. However, potatoes are less desirable than he modern sources such as solar power mainly because batteries of potatoes don't have a good aesthetic.

Comments
It's an interesting article because talks about a different source of energy and it follows a simple principle of chemistry. Besides it is a cheap source it doesn't harm the environment like some sources of energy that are used nowadays. If potatoes were used instead of electricity , even in only lamps, a large amount of energy would be saved.

For the Children's Sake, Put Down That Smart Phone__Faten

Summary:

The article"For the Children's Sake, Put Down That Smart Phone"that written by Patti Neighmond, talks about our live where the electronic devices"cell phones"are running a large portion. We know the kids are spending their time on the smart devices. But Dr. Jenny padesky, a pediatrician, noticed that parents spend most of their time on cell phone more than their kids. She made a study on 55 groups of parents and young children.
She discovered in the study that a high percentage of parents used their smart phone during a meal. In her study noticed three boy act and do silly things to get their father attention while the father is typing on his phone. The father just shouted them to stop. Recently, we used to see this life style in many places.
According to Steiner Adair in her book, interviewed 1,000 children between the ages of 4 and 18, asking them about their parents' use of mobile devices. The kids who are asked about their parents have similar answer and mix feeling if "SAD, ANGRY, and LONLEY" to be ignored by your parents that left a bad feeling that make them feel like undesirable. Adair says "we don't know exactly how much these mini moments of disconnect between a parent and child affect the child in the long term". But based on the stories she hears, she suggests that parents think twice before picking up a mobile device when they're with their kids.

Commentary:

In my opinion the smart devices are beautiful and useful revolution, but most of people don't use them in the right way. I believe that the smart devices become a part of our lives and control it. We have to control our selves and limit our using these devices. And parents have to spend time with their kids rather than spending time playing on their devices.

Neon signs are dying, but our appreciation isn't__Yina

Link: Neon signs are dying, but our appreciation isn't

SUMMARY:     A few years ago neon lights are fading as cities ban signs. They are always makes cities's life colorful and energitic! But with the pollution of city is growing, the  biggest problem in controlling light pollution is that most people are aware of its effects. When the night comes everyday people can always feel that the neon lights are hurting their eyes and they can't sleep well.To decrease these effects  can use lights only when needed, direct lights down, and put controls on outdoor lighting. Such steps are necessary if we want to save our view of the universe, and the future of astronomy. But neon light does have long history,in 1902, just a few years after neon gas was discovered by British chemists. And the French engineer brought neon lights to the U.S.In the 1930s, neon was everywhere in America. In the beginning of the decade, shops saw the glowing lights as a novelty, though an expensive one, to keep them competitive. They were installed for big corporate chain retailers like car dealers. But the neon lights are a little bit expensive. So soon the business founds the cheaper one which is the neon light's subsitute goods----LEDs,then almost the big cities turned off their neon lights instead the LEDs. But now some people and artists realizes that the neon light is also the culture of their country.Preserving neon and making people aware of it has become the mission of the Neon Art Museum, as well as the other big museum in the U.S and even other countries.

COMMENTS:

In my hometown, which is the most modern city of China----HONGKONG,is famous of the neon lights at night! If you have ever come to hongkong at night, you will be attracted by these neon lights on the streets. But the light pollution is really serious in these years. Turning off the neon lights in the city maybe is the right choice for the environment. But on the other hand for the city or the country is losing their culture in some ways. So in my view I think maybe the government should dived cBut on the other hand for the city or the country is losing their culture in some ways. So in my view I think maybe the government should dived the downtown of city into some sectors, and build one sector as the “Night Culture” here can keep the neon lights and it also can help the residents have a good rest at night!

1.
 1.   Freshness and be harmful

(And better have some at nice restaurant instead). Thai tropical fruits are recommended to try fresh but make sure that they are washed.
2   2   Ice and Water
They are so cheap in Thailand. The ice that is made from ice factory is usually safe but when it comes as crush ice. You con not sure that it’s safe. There are  plenty of 7-eleven  almost of everywhere in Thailand. You can choose what kind of water you want to drink  and buy your own  bottle  drink and you do not have to worry anymore.

The serious plane accident in Taiwan_John

link :http://www.cnn.com/2014/07/24/world/asia/taiwan-plane-crash/

 summary:
There was an serious plane accident in Taiwan and it caused at least forty eight dead in this horrible accident. The flight GE 222 was preparing to land at Magong airport, but because of typhoon Matmo there was a heavy rain at that time. Although the weather was horrible, the pilot still attempted to land in the airport. Hence, the tragedy happened and caused a lot of injuries and dead. What's worse many family were broken in this serious accident and they were so upset that they heard this bad news.
comment :
I think it is an horrible accident. However, I do not know why the pilot wanted to land in the airport at that time because the weather condition is too bad to land. Because of this accident, many family lose their relatives and friends. I think that they are not only sad but also angry at the TransAsia Airways because the typhoon is coming and they still wanted to land. Hence, it caused many casualties in this accident. I also hear that the family members have to go to Penghu  and attend the funeral there. But there are not enough rooms for these people. Therefore, there are a lot of residences in Penghu lend some of their rooms in their house. Although some people may decline to their kindness, they still appreciate the residence's kindness. Now many people are discussing this issue because there are many debate in this accident. The most important controversy is that why the pilot still wanted to land with a horrible condition. The pilot's judgement may have some problem because he thought it is OK to land. However, his judgement was totally wrong and the airplane crashed. Many people angry about that why they didn't return when they saw the extremely terrible weather condition. I so sad to hear this news and I hope the dead can go to the paradise.

Day of Rage' leaves 5 dead in West Bank ------Henry

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2014/07/25/israel-gaza-conflict/13147175/

Today we talk about USA TODAY news .The war happened in Palestinian.GAZA CITY — Five Palestinians were shot and killed Friday as protests erupted in the West Bank after Palestinians called for a "Day of Rage" against the Israeli military's operation.

The circumstances surrounding the shootings in the northern village .Many people escape the village.Security was beefed up Friday  after thousands clashed with Israeli security forces Thursday night, leaving at least one Palestinian dead. Thursday's protests at a West Bank checkpoint and in East Jerusalem marked the largest demonstrations in those areas in several years. The violence follows the shelling Thursday of a U.N. school, where at least 15 were killed and dozens wounded as the U.N. was trying to evacuate civilians .The Palestinian Red Crescent said Israeli shells hit the school. The Israeli military said it was reviewing the incident and suggested Hamas-launched rockets may have been responsible for the deaths.

The conflict — in its 18th day — has killed 828 Palestinians and left 5,200 injured, said Ashraf al-Kidra, a Palestinian health official. Since July 8, 35 Israelis — including 33 soldiers — have been killed. A Thai worker in Israel also died.An Israeli soldier Hamas claimed to be holding, was in fact killed in battle Sunday.Meanwhile, Palestinian Justice Minister Saleem Al-Saqqa and Ismail Jabr, the Gaza court public prosecutor, filed a complaint to the International Criminal Court on Friday, accusing Israel of war crimes, including apartheid, attacks against civilians, excessive loss of human life and colonization.A truce proposed by Egypt last week was rejected by Hamas because the group said it wasn't consulted. Hamas says any peace deal must include the lifting of a blockade against Gaza.

Personally, I'm for the Israeli absorbing Gaza and the West Bank into Israel and doing whatever they want with the millions of Palestinians: otherwise there's no end to this conflict. But it's not like the Israelis are innocent. What about the continued turning the West Bank into Swiss Cheese by installing Israeli Settlements which dig wells that lower the ground water levels and destroy Palestinian olive groves that have been in the same families for centuries? EVERY other nation on Earth, including the USA, has demanded their end. They are certainly part of the reason for the missiles.

Do you think my personal hero is a real hero ? so there is no answer for the meaning of hero , it's depending on you , if I consider that my friend or my father or any person my hero , maybe that's person means no thing for you . Millions love 'beautiful game,' so why does China struggle with football?---Sally

   Summary:
In China, there are 1.3 billion people. But it couldnt to organize a football team for 11 people into the World Cup. They lost again and again. The people in China is disappointed and desperate. Since 2002, the last -- and only -- time it made it to the World Cup finals, Team China has struggled internationally. Because of failure all the time for the China football group, who is not for lack of trying. They has a imported pedigree, It's often considered an issue of leadership, with flashy, expensive foreign hires typically made to steer the national team. The couches would boost the teams coherence. But it wasnt have a big achievements.
Property tycoon who establish the Evergrande International Football School, is incubate young football talent on a 167-acre campus.
There are disproportionately tiny pool in China. Although the China has a big population, it is a little persons to play the football.
Same as the methods of the TV show choosing the singer, football group in China also to choose some grassroots players. So many football stars who learned technical skills with no coach in the world.
Because the one child policy, the parents hope their child have to study in the university, they thought it would be the entertainment to play the soccer, they wouldt pay more to send child to play the football, moreover, China is not a big country about the soccer. So it is a necessary problem for the China.

Commentary:
The origin of the football was in China, and the modern football activity was imported in Europe from 19 centry. So recently, why the football, which the China invented, is not popular in China? And how to make well the career of the China football? I think there are three reasons.
Firstly, the main problems is governments and parents support . In China, there are few free play grounds, in which we can play the soccer. And in this play ground, they are all the 30 years old people to play it. The child, who are all cracked down in the home or school to study, have no time to play the soccer.
Secondly, i think the problem is existed in the policy of choosing and recruiting. The football teams in China are paying attention to money and benefit, but ignoring the teamwork and coherence. The player dont unite during the compete, they all played for themself such as playing it in a personal game.
Finally, there are few people to play soccer in China, and i think the the total people participation is very significant. According the special education in China, the little child who are protected beyond the limits. Maybe they lose some qualities to do the athletics.

What to Eat Before a Workout? Lei Chen

Summarize:

What’s the best thing to eat before an exercise? Usually the answer is eating some a low-fat, high-carb meal or snack foods one to four hours before. It is because that the food depends on your exercise's intensity and your personal preferences.

Short time exercise such as no more than one hour walking or cycling is unlimited diet. However, if you will do long time exercise, the food can be affected by your performance and feeling.

To find what foods best for you is an absolutely significant. According to the guideline, when you want to begin the activity right away, do not eat anything!

Eating some foods which are high in carbs and low in fat and moderate in protein like milk, crackers and so on can help our to keep the energy from  blood sugar and carbohydrate stores. In this way, we do not worry about stomachache.

Carbohydrate plays a vital role in body's source of energy. It is used more efficiently than proteins or fats.  There is doubt why should not you eat more protein than carbs beforehand, while you are doing strength training. It is because that according to a plenty of studies, eating carbs shortly before exercise is the best way to improve performance.

Studies show that while you exercise eats some foods or liquids in order to attain pre-exercise calories, they have not difference.

Fast is able to affect performance rather than help to quickly burn carols. If you are doing prolonged exercise, you need to eat small high-carb food and beverage to maintain blood sugar and water.

In addition, The American College of Sports Medicine suggests that while you are doing long time aerobic exercise except water, you also need to some potassium and sodium. The best way is to drink sports drinks.

Comments:

All in all, as a university student, I think while our are doing or prepare exercise, our body must have enough calories and water in order to keep health for two reasons.

First of all, if people lack carbs such as limosis to take exercise, it is a bad way to lose weight. I used to fast in order to lose weight. I remember I best record was that four days did not eat anything only drink milk. Though the result was obvious at that time, the side effect also was obvious. When I finished fast, my weight increased rapidly.

Secondly, I learn about when you are doing exercise, you must drink a lot of water. Take me, I used to like to drink Coke when I am playing basketball, for example. As a result, I got a kidney stone. Now I drink a lot of water everyday whatever if to take exercise.

Quick DNA Tests Crack Medical Mysteries Otherwise Missed__Faten

Summary:

According to the article “Quick DNA Crack Medical Mysteries Otherwise Missed” that had written by RICHARD HARRIS mentioned the researchers found a new technique way to diagnose infectious diseases. Instead of guessing or assumption what patient could have and making different kind of tests by taking a sample of infected person’s blood and search through the DNA in it, by looking for sequences that match with virus, bacterium, a fungue or parasite.

Regarding to the article the first result for this technique which called Next Generation Sequencing is reported by scientists who are from the University of San Francisco. This technique was tested on a patient called Andrea Struve, a 21-year-old who returned from Australia with nasty set symptoms by Dr. Charles Chiu, who is running the study, and his colleagues. They made the experiment by extracting DNA from Struve’s blood and run it through superfast sequencing machine then compared the DNA they found with a huge library of all kind of DNA sequences of infectious agents. They found that she infected with virus related to chicken box-  one that normally causes a roseola rash in young children. When Struve went to the doctor, Her doctor made a bunch of guesses about the infectious cause, but all the tests came back negative.

Moreover, Dr. Chiu study involved a medical mystery about 14 years old boy in Wisconsin with brain inflammation, so Dr. Chiu got the sample in few days and with 48 hours he was able to run the assay and detect the organism which is a bacterium called Leptospira and which is common in the tropics that cause the infection. Dr. Chiu and his colleague think the boy picked the microbe while he taking a swim during a family vacation in Puerto Rico. The boy recovered after intensive Penicillin treatment.

This technique has been tested in more than 30 cases so far by Dr. Chiu. He and his colleague have been able to identify an infectious culprit about 25 percent of the time. Some of the remaining cases turned out not to be infections at all. This technique is still experimental and it is done at university and cost about 1,000$ in labor and material without including the expensive machinery. Dr. Chiu hopes in time it will become the go-to analysis when traditional blood tests don't provide the answer.

Commentary:
In my opinion this new Technology will change the Medicine world and will save people lives by diagnosing their illness before put their lives in risks.
